One Month Before Moving:
• Fill out change of address form
• Fill out IRS change of address form
• Make arrangements with moving company or reserve moving truck
• Transfer memberships: clubs, gym, and civic organizations.
• Ask doctor and dentist for referrals and transfer prescriptions
• Take inventory of your belongings before they’re packed; in the event you need to file an insurance claim
• Make arrangements for transporting pets
• Start using up food items, so there is less to pack and possibly spoil
One to Two Weeks Before Moving:
• Switch utility services to new address: Electric, Water, Gas, Newspaper, Magazine Subscription, Telephone, Cable company
• Arrange for help on moving day
• Defrost freezer and refrigerator
• Check with your insurance company to see how your possessions are covered during transit
• Collect important records; gather personal family records (medical, dental, school), legal and financial documents, birth certificates, passports and insurance. Carry it with you in your car to new home
• Notify any creditors of your move. Transfer your bank accounts
• Pack a travel kit for when you get to your new home: Put aside checkbook, credit cards, personal phone book, ID, flashlight, keys, toiletries, tools, paper plates, cups, towels, travel alarm clock, aspirin, bandages and games for the kids
After Arriving at Your New Home:
• Renew driver’s license, auto registration, and tags
• Shop around for new insurance policies, especially auto coverage
• Locate the hospitals, police stations, veterinarian, and fire stations near home
